Cornelian cherry dogwood
📍 30 Stewart Park, Ithaca, NY 14850, USA
🗓 Season: August · September
🔍 When is it ripe?
Bright red olive-shaped berries. Very sour when first red — wait until they turn deep red and fall freely or can be shaken off. High in vitamin C. Good for jam, wine, and sauce.
"The fruit turn cherry red in late summer and are edible. The fruit are similar in taste to tart cherries and can be used for jams, jellies, pies, syrups, and wine. The fruit are high in vitamin C. Cornelian cherry dogwoods are most commonly planted as ornamentals in home landscapes."
I found the (few ripe) fruit to be incredibly acidic, so I wouldn't eat directly, but use for jam or other purpose.
