🍐
Asian pear
📍 Park Office, 100 Zoo Rd, Rochester, NY 14617, USA
🗓 Season: August · September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Round, yellow-bronze skin. Unlike European pears, eat when still firm — they do not soften at room temperature. Ripe when colour develops fully and a sweet fragrance is detectable. Crisp, juicy flesh.
Full-size Asian Pear tree, assuming it's wild grown. Delicious small oblong fruit, with a crisp, bubblegum flavor. I've gone out of my way to check ripeness and harvest from this tree the last few years; these pears are that good! Picking pole would be helpful, as the tree is tall and on a hill. Public land, within Durand-Eastman County Park.
Harvest time Sept-Oct
Also have found Autumn Olives, Puffball Mushrooms, Stinging and Wood Nettles, and Field Garlic within immediate vicinity of this tree - worthwhile foraging spot if you know what's around.
