Serviceberry

📍 480 Intercampus Dr, Rochester, NY 14620, USA
Serviceberry Private
🗓 Season: June · July
🔍 When is it ripe?
Small, round, turning from red to deep purple-black. Sweet and blueberry-like when fully dark. Birds eat them as soon as they ripen — check daily. Best fresh or in pies and jam.
Three serviceberry bushes stand near the entrance to Goergen Hall on the UR River Campus. They're on the Hajim quad, right next to an emergency phone topped with a bright blue light and a few paces from a creepy bronze statue of Ed Hajim. You can't miss it. During the fall and spring semesters, thousands of undergraduates stream right by these bushes on a daily basis, presumably unaware of the sweet purple goodness that will appear only after they've left for summer vacation. UR is private property, but visitors are typically welcome, and I don't think anyone will care if you harvest a snack or two. As of June 5, 2020, the berries are newly formed, and far from ripe. They should be edible in a few weeks.
