🌳
ginkgo
📍 3115 Machado Ave, Santa Clara, CA 95051, USA
🗓 Season: October · November
🔍 When is it ripe?
Female trees only: fleshy, apricot-like fruit falls when ripe, emitting a very unpleasant rancid-butter smell. Wear gloves — the outer flesh causes dermatitis. The inner nut is edible; roast or boil after removing shells. Limit intake (toxins at high dose).
The plant is on someone's front lawn but the smelly fruit litter the sidewalk and curb. Please harvest while wearing rubber gloves as ginkgo fruit may cause skin rashes. Once the fruit is removed (soak in water or let dry), the nut can be used for roasting, or cracked to use the inside for porridge. Do not eat too many as too many can be toxic.
