🗓 Season: September · October · August
🔍 When is it ripe?
Chokeberry: Red or black (Aronia) berries. Very astringent and tart raw — high in antioxidants. Best dried, juiced, or made into jam. Ripe when fully coloured and slightly soft.
elderberry: Dark blue-black clusters when ripe. Cook thoroughly before eating — raw berries are mildly toxic. Ripe when all berries are dark and clusters hang downward.
Several elderberry trees on this footpath between Campkin Road and Nun’s Way Recreaton Ground. Also what look like chokeberries! More elderberry trees if you follow the footpath around the perimeter of the recreation ground towards Daily Bread Cooperative.
