Olive (Olea)
📍 8443 Haven Ave UNIT 139, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91730, USA
🗓 Season: October · November · December
🔍 When is it ripe?
Green in October (oil forming), turning purple-black November–December. Harvest for oil when 50% black; for table olives, pick to match intended colour. Must be cured in brine or lye — extremely bitter raw.
In the planters - easy access inside the dining area that is located outside.
These seem to be mission olives. They can be picked when green or when ripe. They have bugs (if you place the olives in a bag - after a few weeks the olive flies will pop their head out creepily) and so most olive growing no longer exists in Rancho Cucamonga and Ontario anymore - it moved. However, they still process shipments of olives from far off places in these cities - like at the graber olive house. The seeds are collectible if they're of any use.
That said the leaves aren't buggy (unless a bug decided to make a home there) - so that's able to be picked. Olive leaves are very edible - with the phytochemicals of olives but without the fat. Make it into tea or infused water.
