🔍 When is it ripe?
Small, round berries turn from orange-red to dark purple-black. Ripe when dark and slightly soft; sweet, date-like flavour with a hard seed. Persistent through winter — a valuable wildlife and emergency food. Eat fresh or dry and grind (seed included).
Several hackberry trees grow here and elsewhere along the trails at wolf pen creek (upper and lower). They tend to produce prodigious quatities of seeds in late Autumn and through Winter; very good for grinding up to make trail bars or to add sweetness to other dishes....
