Black walnut
📍 36 Central St, Somerville, MA 02143, USA
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Harvest when the green husk turns yellow-green and the nut falls naturally or can be shaken loose. Wear gloves — the husk stains permanently. Remove husk immediately, then cure nuts in a cool, airy place for 2–3 weeks before cracking. Intensely flavoured.
Very large healthy tree. Bumper crop in 2013 but only forage if you are willing to do hours of hard labor in preparing these delicious treats. On private property but no one from the housing complex will care. Last seen in 2014. Approximate age 70 years.
