🌳
Hawthorn · Shagbark hickory
🗓 Season: September · October · November
🔍 When is it ripe?
Hawthorn: Deep red haws (berries) develop from green. Ripe when dark red and slightly soft. Edible raw but mealy — better for haw jelly, syrup, or wine. Contains a large stone. Improve after first frost.
Shagbark hickory: Thick green husk splits into four sections when ripe. Nuts fall; gather from the ground. Rich, sweet, buttery flavour — worth the effort of cracking the very hard shell. Dry for 2–3 weeks.
Several trees clustered between these buildings, and some behind the nearby buildings. Also some Haws mixed into tree line.
