Chokeberry

📍 10415 North St, Fairfax, VA 22030, USA
Chokeberry Public
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Red or black (Aronia) berries. Very astringent and tart raw — high in antioxidants. Best dried, juiced, or made into jam. Ripe when fully coloured and slightly soft.
At least 50 bushes loaded with aronia berries (chokeberries) that are ripe to pick end of July and well into August. The bushes are part of a period garden put in by the City, based on historical records. They border the park area on both sides and I harvested them last year after talking to an attendant from Parks & Rec who was grateful to have them removed from property because kids play with them and squash them into the concrete (which leaves terrible stains that must be scrubbed off with chemicals). Enjoy and happy picking!
