🔍 When is it ripe?
Colour fully develops (purple, red, or yellow by variety) and a waxy bloom appears on the skin. Softens slightly at the tip. Taste-test for sweetness — European plums are better slightly soft; Japanese types can be harvested firmer.
Victoria plum tree the plums, a deep carmine rose, have a nice flavour, and as well as a dessert they make the very best jams. One of the best loved of all fruit trees, no orchard or fruit garden is complete without a Victoria (arguably!). Although Victoria plums are, unusually for plums, self fertile, yields are likely to be improved by planting with an appropriate pollinator.
