🔍 When is it ripe?
Background colour changes from green to yellow or cream (variety determines final colour). Seeds inside should be brown. Flesh yields slightly to thumb pressure. A ripe apple releases with a gentle upward twist — no pulling. Check the ground for natural drops.
The Battery has loads of apples. It takes a little climbing to get to the ones outside of anyone's property lines, but you can do it. Most are smallish, sour red ones, but there are also a few trees by the canon with medium, yellow, sweeter apples. Fruit of each variety is juicy; good fresh and for cooking.
I've rated the yield as "excellent", because for heaven's sake they're producing fruit in about two inches of soil on the side of a cliff. Somebody please propagate them.
