Cornelian cherry dogwood
🗓 Season: August · September
🔍 When is it ripe?
Bright red olive-shaped berries. Very sour when first red — wait until they turn deep red and fall freely or can be shaken off. High in vitamin C. Good for jam, wine, and sauce.
Several (4 I think) mature Cornelian Cherry dogwoods, with ripe fruit in Sept-Oct. Easily accessible from path, abundantly fruited, and nobody else picks from them. They're not that great for eating fresh from the tree until late in the season, but take some home and leave them in your fridge for a week. Still acidic, but much sweeter and softer, I believe they ripen better off the tree. Also makes an excellent wine fruit because of the complexity of flavor.
