🌰
Black walnut · Commons Ecology
📍 633 W 5th Ave, Columbus, OH 43201, USA
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Harvest when the green husk turns yellow-green and the nut falls naturally or can be shaken loose. Wear gloves — the husk stains permanently. Remove husk immediately, then cure nuts in a cool, airy place for 2–3 weeks before cracking. Intensely flavoured.
Cluster of black walnuts right next to the trail between the Hyatt and Olentangy river. Many of the fruit has rotted by now but can be harvested for seed.
