🔍 When is it ripe?
Small apples ripen from green to red, yellow, or orange by variety. Very tart raw but excellent for jelly and cider. Ripe when the colour is fully developed and the fruit lifts off with a gentle twist.
Dwarf crabapple. On 123rd Street, from Pulaski and heading east, there are over a dozen of these ornamental--and good for the birds!--trees. The ripe fruit is a dark mahogany red.
