🔍 When is it ripe?
Sage: Harvest young, grey-green leaves before or during flowering for best flavour. Woody older leaves are less aromatic. Dry well for year-round use. Flowers are edible as a garnish.
Tomato: Uniformly coloured (red, orange, yellow, or purple by variety) with slight give when squeezed. A ripe tomato separates easily from the vine. Fully coloured fruit stored at room temperature — never refrigerate.
St. Lucas runs a community garden. In 2022 it was planted and then let run wild, but in prior years it was maintained (I can't speak on those years). Workers from the St. Lucas soup kitchen sometimes take small harvests for their meals. Anyone's free and welcome to harvest. 2022 garden included: asparagus peas, okra, tomatoes, milkweed, cucumbers, zucchini, squash, peppers, bell peppers, banana peppers, eggplant, sage, raspberries, asparagus, common beans, and dill. some things fare better than others. best producing ones were tomato, common beans, milkweed, raspberry, squash, okra, sage, dill, and asparagus peas. There's something to see every season.
