European wild pear

European wild pear Public
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Small, hard, gritty pears. Very astringent raw — better after a frost or brief storage. Use for perry or pectin-rich jelly.
A species of wild pear that may have contributed some of the genetic material that our modern 'common' pears contains. Trees are shrubby, bear thorns and the fruit is small, round and very astringent until late in the season when it sweetens but is still rather dry. Is probably best suited to preserves and sauces.
