🌰
Black walnut
📍 3309 Arlington Ave, Toledo, OH 43614, USA
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Harvest when the green husk turns yellow-green and the nut falls naturally or can be shaken loose. Wear gloves — the husk stains permanently. Remove husk immediately, then cure nuts in a cool, airy place for 2–3 weeks before cracking. Intensely flavoured.
Two black walnut trees behind Arlington South apartments (on the side towards UTMC). The one closest to Arlington produces slightly less, but much larger, fruits. They're on the far side of the parking lot, so you aren't bothering anyone, even if you're not from the apartments. Some fruits fall over the fence to W Medical Loop, as well.
There's a period in the middle of the season where the hulls are riddled with hull maggots. They don't do any damage, and even soften the hulls, but can be unpleasant to deal with when hulling. If you wait a few weeks, they'll all be done with their hull-dwelling life stage and the hulls are left clear and soft enough to open with your thumb.
Any time during the season there's always plenty falling to the ground to eventually rot, even with the squirrels taking a few occasionally. Plenty to go around. Meat is good
