🔍 When is it ripe?
Berries fully coloured and slightly soft. Stem where it joins the bunch turns woody and brown. Seeds easily visible inside. Sweet throughout when fully ripe — taste from different parts of the cluster as they ripen unevenly. Grapes do not continue ripening after harvest.
All along Franklin avenue, you can find grape plants growing along the river side of the road. In late summer, these will become healthy grapes but during the earlier summer months, the leaves are tender and fantastic for dolmas or pickling. Be aware that you will need to wash them carefully given their proximity to the steel mills and the river. And be careful of drivers, there is limited visibility and people enjoy taking those curves quickly.
