📍 14790 Cedar Springs Ave NE, Cedar Springs, MI 49319, USA
American elderberryStaghorn sumac Public
🗓 Season: August · September
🔍 When is it ripe?
American elderberry: Blue-black berries in flat clusters; cook before eating. Ripe when uniformly dark blue-black and heavy. Also note: elderflowers in June are edible raw and excellent for cordial.
Staghorn sumac: Deep red, fuzzy, cone-shaped seed clusters. Ripe in August–September. Soak clusters in cold water for 20–30 minutes, strain, and sweeten for pink 'sumac lemonade'. Very high in vitamin C. Do not confuse with white-berried poison sumac (wetlands, white berries = avoid).
A few elderberry shrubs alongside the white pine trail near the cedar springs trailhead. Cant remember where exactly they are along the trail. Probably within a mile (walking north) of the marker. Elderberry ripe late Aug 2023. Also lots of sumac along the trail. Likely black raspberries as well but they were not in season.
