🌳
Canadian serviceberry
🗓 Season: June · July
🔍 When is it ripe?
Turns deep blue-purple when ripe; sweet and mild. Harvest over several days as clusters ripen unevenly. A favourite of birds — compete early.
These trees are in trouble! They are infected with a fungal disease called cedar apple rust. This type of fungus needs two hosts in order to live, so serviceberries often become infected when they are close to junipers. Unfortunately whoever planted these trees didn't know about the juniper problem, and they planted them right next to the serviceberries. We can try to help eradicate the fungus by cutting off the infected parts of the trees, but unfortunately all 23 of the serviceberry trees are already suffering from this fungus. If anyone knows who is in charge of landscaping in the park, the best thing to do would be to contact them and get them to relocate the little junipers. If we wait too long, the fungus will suffocate the trees and there will be no fruit for anyone
