elderberry

elderberry Public
🗓 Season: August · September
🔍 When is it ripe?
Dark blue-black clusters when ripe. Cook thoroughly before eating — raw berries are mildly toxic. Ripe when all berries are dark and clusters hang downward.
Nice collection of elderberry plants throughout Red Bug Slough. I've made good jelly and wine from what I've collected here and gathered clippings that now grow on my property. Beware raw elderberry is toxic. Must be cooked or fermented before consumption. Park in lot off of Beneva or at the intersection of Lockwood Ridge and Gypsy St. A majority of the plants are midway between these two parking spots, alongside the water.
