Blackberry

📍 8947 Snowden River Pkwy, Columbia, MD 21045, USA
Blackberry Public
🗓 Season: July · August · September
🔍 When is it ripe?
Fully black (not red or dark red) and comes off the stem with no resistance — zero pull. Dull rather than shiny; a shiny black berry is still slightly underripe and tart. Eat the same day for best flavour.
Go into the Gateway Commerce Center entrance and take the first left. As you head along the straightaway, there will be a big, long chain-link fence to your left. The blackberries are all over it. So many blackberries. Most of them are large ones, too, like the cultivated kind, not the small wild kind. I've gotten about 20 pints per summer here for the last 3 years, but I'm moving out of the area. Someone else should take up the harvest so the birds don't get all of the berries! This is in a commercial/industrial area, and they could probably ask you to leave if they wanted, but nobody's ever said anything to me. Just park somewhere out of the way, get your berries, and go home. Also, watch out for poison ivy. It likes to grow along the fence too.
