Pecan
🗓 Season: October · November
🔍 When is it ripe?
The green husk splits into four sections and turns brown when ripe. Shake branches or wait for fall. Cure in a cool, dry place for 2–3 weeks. Kernels should be full and not shrivelled.
This is LCRA's Camp Creek, one of the few free public campsites near Austin. It's apparently an old pecan orchard -- there are dozens of very large pecan trees throughout this property, very easy to see as large black spidery trees on the aerial view. Most of them have smaller nuts with thicker shells, but some produce large thin-shelled nuts. Best picking seems to be late October / early November, still a good quantity of nuts on the ground in late November despite abundant wildlife.
