🌳
Wild garlic
📍 199 Old Hall Ln, Manchester, UK
🗓 Season: March · April · May
🔍 When is it ripe?
Star-shaped white flowers and glossy, oval leaves appearing in March–May. Harvest leaves before the flowers open for best flavour. Strong garlic smell confirms identification — do not confuse with toxic lily of the valley (no garlic smell). Bulbs, leaves, and flowers all edible.
There is wild garlic growing in about three places in Birchfields Park. There is a decent patch on the Manchester Grammar School side, just off the tarmac (not dirt) path, and another under the trees where the park backs onto the churchyard. The third is in the gardens over on the other side, but not really enough of it for harvesting.
