🔍 When is it ripe?
Harvest when the green husk turns yellow-green and the nut falls naturally or can be shaken loose. Wear gloves — the husk stains permanently. Remove husk immediately, then cure nuts in a cool, airy place for 2–3 weeks before cracking. Intensely flavoured.
Large Black walnut tree produced heavily in 2014 on the south side of the long trail that circles Nature Hill. Several individuals of the same species can be found on the path from the parking lot to this tree.
