🔍 When is it ripe?
Citrus: Depends on species, but universal cues: fruit is heavy for its size, skin is fully coloured for the variety, and scratch-and-sniff gives a strong citrus aroma. Most citrus holds on the tree for months once ripe.
Grapefruit: Large, yellow to pale orange. Heavy for its size; skin slightly smooth rather than puffy. Can hang on the tree for months once coloured. Taste is the best test — should be sweet-tart, not bitter.
Lemon: Fully yellow with no green remaining; skin slightly glossy and gives a little when squeezed. Heavy for its size indicates juiciness. Unlike most fruit, lemons can hang on the tree for months once ripe without deteriorating.
Orange: Fully orange skin (can be green-tinged in warm climates and still ripe). Heavy for its size, with a smooth, slightly glossy skin. Scratch and sniff — a sweet orange smell confirms ripeness. Navel oranges develop the distinctive navel opposite the stem.
I mean to pin this whole neighborhood as many people in this area have citrus trees (orange, grapefruit, tangerine, lemon) in their front yards. Each street has at least a couple yards that have a tree. Every time I've asked the homeowner, they told me I could have as many as I wanted. Just ask first.
