🌳
American persimmon
📍 5221 Haras Pl, Fort Washington, MD 20744, USA
🗓 Season: October · November · December
🔍 When is it ripe?
Must be fully ripe (very soft, almost jelly-like) before eating. Harvest after first frost or when naturally falling. Dark orange to purple when ready. Rich, caramel-sweet flavour.
Along the highway’s narrow shoulder, there are 4 fruiting female trees. If you pass the fedex sign on the right you went too far. Northbound 495 Between exits 4 & 7 on right shoulder.
Because its a highway its very difficult to find a safe time or place to pull over and access this tree, as cars are whizzing by and honking loudly. But it’s dripping with beautiful sweet ripe orange fruit. It is October 15th 2022.
Beware of yellow jackets, ants, spiders, and sharp debris/ trash along the gaurd rail/shoulder lane. I did have an ant crawl up my pants and bite me and a spider landed on my head but it was worth it.
Resist the urge to climb over the gaurdrails. The ground is soft with high weeds and an insanely steep long drop. You will hurt yourself and no one will know you are wayyyyy down there when you fall. Your cries for help will go unnoticed over highway noise. Do not climb over the guard rail!
If i find one in a safer location, I will edit this post to include that location.
Some fruits are not yet ripe and of course are still astringent and will cause mouth and stomach discomfort if eaten. Its best to leave the unripe fruit alone until winter and pick only the shriveled dark and orange ones with dark brown splotches and/or a white chalky film on the skin. The ones on the ground are best.
Happy Foraging!!! :)
