🗓 Season: August · September · June · July
🔍 When is it ripe?
American elderberry: Blue-black berries in flat clusters; cook before eating. Ripe when uniformly dark blue-black and heavy. Also note: elderflowers in June are edible raw and excellent for cordial.
Black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis): Deep purple-black; pulls free from the hollow centre. Strongly flavoured. Picks over about two weeks — check every couple of days.
Red raspberry: Bright red and detaches from the core plug with no resistance. Fragrant and very soft when ripe. Autumn-fruiting varieties produce a second flush in September–October.
On Morin Brick road. As you turn onto the road there are raspberry canes to the left and beyond that are elderberry bushes. May want to access the elderberries from the previous road to avoid thorns. Then down the hill to the right are more raspberries and then blackberries. On the left side continuing on are milkweed plants.
