🌳
elderberry
🗓 Season: August · September
🔍 When is it ripe?
Dark blue-black clusters when ripe. Cook thoroughly before eating — raw berries are mildly toxic. Ripe when all berries are dark and clusters hang downward.
Elderberry bushes exist by the side of the bike path near the bird sanctuary. Use flowers in spring for fritters or cook the berries for jam, sauce, etc. Do not eat raw and remove the stems which are said to be poisonous.
