🌳
American elderberry
📍 18A Shadyside Ave, Concord, MA 01742, USA
🗓 Season: August · September
🔍 When is it ripe?
Blue-black berries in flat clusters; cook before eating. Ripe when uniformly dark blue-black and heavy. Also note: elderflowers in June are edible raw and excellent for cordial.
2 elderberry bushes with excellent yield. You can find them in the overgrown bushed along the trail, but they are fairly hidden. This is a working farm, managed by Concord's Natural Resources Division and the area gets cut back regularly. Access can be found across from 214 Shadyside Ave. (Look for a pull in before the no trespassing signs on the left, there will be a sign that says Kaveski hidden under the trees). Or by access from the Battle Road Trail on the National Park land.
