Mango
🗓 Season: May · June · July · August · September
🔍 When is it ripe?
Smell is the best guide — a ripe mango is intensely fragrant at the stem end. Skin colour varies (yellow, red, green) by variety and is not reliable. Fruit yields to gentle pressure. The cheeks fill out and round. Harvest slightly firm for best transport; ripen at room temperature.
This neighborhood between NW 7th Ave and NW 9th Ave (going east to west) and NW 2nd St and NW 6th St (going south to north) is a good neighborhood for foraging mangos. There are a lot of empty lots with mango trees on them. There are some large, minimal fiber varieties and some small, very fibrous varieties to pick from. I was there mid June 2019 and found trees at different stages from not ideally ready, to perfect timing. My experience is that June and July is a good time for harvesting, but that window could be larger. I visited over 50 trees in this area and nearby streets and am not entering all of the trees. There are so many mango trees and with some exploration the bounty is there to be harvested and shared. Mangos are so prolific in this area that you can collect hundreds and hundreds in a weekend. Please be respectful in all of your interactions. -Rob Greenfield
