Shagbark hickory

📍 5399 Vann Rd, Newburgh, IN 47630, USA
Shagbark hickory
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Thick green husk splits into four sections when ripe. Nuts fall; gather from the ground. Rich, sweet, buttery flavour — worth the effort of cracking the very hard shell. Dry for 2–3 weeks.
This is the remnant of a natural hickory nut grove. It's located behind the ball fields next to the stream. Many of the original trees were destroyed to make the fields but the trees are making a comeback with many newer trees in the last 10 years. You will have to walk through scrub undergrowth and snakes have been seen here at various times of the year. Most optimal time to forage for nuts is first weekend after Labor Day.
