California laurel

📍 3419 47th Ave SW, Seattle, WA 98116, USA
California laurel Private but overhanging
🗓 Season: January · February · March · April · May · June · July · August · September · October · November · December
🔍 When is it ripe?
Leaves harvested year-round as a bay leaf substitute — much stronger than culinary bay, so use half as much. Ripe purple berries (September–November) can be roasted and eaten like chocolate-flavoured nuts after removing the skin.
Large specimen mostly fenced but overhangs alleyway. Nuts fall in Sept-Nov, tasty when dried and roasted, but often will find only the husks because the squirrels seem to really like them. Currently covered in flower buds but no open flowers.
