ginkgo

📍 11898 S Pulaski Rd, Alsip, IL 60803, USA
ginkgo Public
🗓 Season: October · November
🔍 When is it ripe?
Female trees only: fleshy, apricot-like fruit falls when ripe, emitting a very unpleasant rancid-butter smell. Wear gloves — the outer flesh causes dermatitis. The inner nut is edible; roast or boil after removing shells. Limit intake (toxins at high dose).
A young ginkgo tree is right outside the entrance to the library. This is on public land -- it's library property--but it is a good idea to let the librarians know if you want to examine this tree closely. I think it is a male because the staff would not want to drive away patrons with the rotting odor of the fruit.
