Black walnut

📍 5 Bryant St, Portland, ME 04103, USA
Black walnut Public
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Harvest when the green husk turns yellow-green and the nut falls naturally or can be shaken loose. Wear gloves — the husk stains permanently. Remove husk immediately, then cure nuts in a cool, airy place for 2–3 weeks before cracking. Intensely flavoured.
black walnut trees along the park and bordering yards (two duplexes, a multifamily home, and a house with a nice vegetable garden in the back) [source is on public land but overhangs private property] look for round yellow-green fruits on the ground, on average a little smaller than a baseball. they're still good even when the fruit turns black and rots off, but it's better to harvest before then. some assholes live in the corner of the park by the sign with dogshit baggies, underneath the tallest and most fruitful tree, so watch out for them and their kids and dog.
