🌳
Sassafras
📍 465 Bacons Castle Trail, Surry, VA 23883, USA
🗓 Season: August · September
🔍 When is it ripe?
Dark blue-black berries on red stalks. Edible but rarely used. The bark and roots (root beer flavour) contain safrole — regulated. Young leaves can be dried and ground as filé powder for gumbo.
There's a whole line of sassafras trees lining the edge of the Castle's property. The grounds are always open to the public even when the house itself is not open. Feel free to ask the docents, gardeners, or restoration crew if you may take some low hanging limbs, they should be happy to give you as much as you can take by hook or by crook!
