Toyon
🗓 Season: October · November · December
🔍 When is it ripe?
Clusters of bright red berries persist through winter. Mildly toxic raw in large quantities — traditionally roasted or dried. Improve after frost. Used for jelly or dried as a flavouring.
Also known as Christmas-berry due to its time of fruiting, this shrub is planted as an ornamental in several places in this parking lot. The pea-sized berries are bright red, with a taste reminiscent of lemonade. Spit or swallow the seeds, the choice is yours.
