Mulberry
📍 3150 ne 76th ave., portland or
🗓 Season: May · June · July · August
🔍 When is it ripe?
Ripe when fully coloured (white, red, or black by species) and falls at a touch. Spread a sheet and shake the branches. Extremely perishable — process or eat immediately.
This is the mulberry tree in our parking strip next to the street- large tree closest to the driveway (don't confuse it with the Harlequin Glorybower tree next to the utility pole, which berries are probably poisonous).
They are white/pale lilac mulberries - look sort of like raspberries in shape and size. It has never been treated with any pesticides or other chemicals for at least 15 years. They have a very mild flavor, fragrance and fragrance.
The tree produces tons right around the start of July. They fall all over the street, sidewalk and parking strip.
Feel free to harvest fallen fruit and ripe fruit from the tree - they should fall off easily into your hand when ripe and are a darker lilac.
If you make jam or mead or some other preserve with them, we wouldn't turn down a sample left on our porch. :)
