🔍 When is it ripe?
Dark blue-black clusters when ripe. Cook thoroughly before eating — raw berries are mildly toxic. Ripe when all berries are dark and clusters hang downward.
There are several elderberry bushes on the east side of the railroad tracks and the south side of Garden Plain road. There also tends to be many poisonous - deadly water hemlock plants in this area that could be mistaken by beginners as elderflowers. Do not forage here unless you definitely know the difference.
