🔍 When is it ripe?
Fully black (not red or dark red) and comes off the stem with no resistance — zero pull. Dull rather than shiny; a shiny black berry is still slightly underripe and tart. Eat the same day for best flavour.
Previouslly, there had been a large growth of blackberry vines on the side of the interstate here; we picked pounds of them. But I think the city came along and mowed them down. Wild plants are nothing if not tenacious and they may grow back next year, but if not, remember that convincing city governments to allow these kind of places is just as important as spreading knowledge of their existance to others; blackberries are an easy plant to spread, so if you find any be sure to save some of the berries and plant them in a safe spot elsewhere!
