Pecan

Pecan Public
🗓 Season: October · November
🔍 When is it ripe?
The green husk splits into four sections and turns brown when ripe. Shake branches or wait for fall. Cure in a cool, dry place for 2–3 weeks. Kernels should be full and not shrivelled.
There are several Pecan trees in the Green Valley Nature Preserve and Prairie Restoration site in Moline. Enter the preserve from 55th Avenue. You will have to park your car and cross a foot bridge. The pecan trees can be found near the river on your left side not long after you cross the bridge. It's not easy to get to nuts before the squirrels and they like to take them before they are ripe. They ripen at the end of September. The pecan is native to this area but you don't see a lot of them anymore.
