People use the plant for medicinal purposes - as this is where the chemical Shikimic acid comes from for the drug tamiflu (i.e. - helps with viral flu infections. Sap has been used to make chewing gum (hence the name). Growitbuildit's site says branches soaked in water can make toothbrushes. The USDA says you can make tea from the bark and fruit. Green fruit can be made into tea. Ripe and unripe seeds can be eaten raw and used as flour. Leaf buds are eaten raw too according to eatwild's website (on weebly).
