π When is it ripe?
Flowers (white, fragrant clusters) are edible in May and can be eaten raw, fried in batter, or made into syrup. The seeds and green pods are toxic β do not eat. Harvest flowers only.
Large black locust tree right by a productive native black currant bush. Black locust flowers and seeds are traditionally eaten in Europe. See Samuel Thayer's books for more on black locust.
