🌳
Hickory · White oak
📍 200 Morgan Pl SE, Sandy Springs, GA 30350, USA
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Green husks turn brown and split; nuts drop naturally. Gather promptly before wildlife. Kernels should be plump and cream-coloured. Dry before storing.
At about the point (of the trail) indicated on the map, you will begin to find many white oak trees and some scattered hickories. I have as yet been unable to forage any viable hickory nuts (the squirrels seem to favor them highly) but there are abundant (fairly large and meaty) acorns. While the original yield is high, I have found only about 40% of the nuts to be viable (according to the water test) but this seems to be pretty standard. Morgan Falls overlook park is owned by the City of Sandy Springs.
