🔍 When is it ripe?
Green husks turn brown and split; nuts drop naturally. Gather promptly before wildlife. Kernels should be plump and cream-coloured. Dry before storing.
Several large old hickory trees along the road, extremely productive throughout fall and early winter. Hard to crack shells with little meat, but delicious if you have the time. Nuts litter the ground, the many squirrels will be happy to share, bring a big bag!
