🍎
Apple (Malus) · Blackberry
🗓 Season: August · September · October · November · July
🔍 When is it ripe?
Apple (Malus): Background skin colour shifts from green toward yellow; seeds turn brown when ripe. Fruit separates from the spur with a gentle upward twist. Aroma develops near the base. Wild Malus fruit is often small and tart — excellent for cider and jelly.
Blackberry: Fully black (not red or dark red) and comes off the stem with no resistance — zero pull. Dull rather than shiny; a shiny black berry is still slightly underripe and tart. Eat the same day for best flavour.
There are about two or three apple trees growing here. By far, the best apples I've picked in Madison. I've picked apples there in 2014 and 2015. The apple trees are very close in proximity to a tree that bares small black fruit. The previous years, the apples were perfect in size, condition, and taste. I have not sampled this year but saw that they are growing. I've picked as late as mid September, which is late in the season for this fruit. I believe August is the best month.
