Japanese barberry

📍 1301-1449 Merrick St, Belding, MI 48809, USA
Japanese barberry Public
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Small red berries on spiny branches. Edible but very tart — best cooked. Ripe when uniformly red.
TONS of barberries at this forest preserve! Just take the paths into the deciduous forest. Follow them to the gorge/riverbed, and then go wild! These berries are still around during the winter, and since they're bright red, they're easy to find. Great substitute for cranberries. Remember: these are invasive, so eat your fill!!
