Black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis) · Raspberry
📍 Alum Creek Trail, Westerville, OH 43081, USA
🗓 Season: June · July · August
🔍 When is it ripe?
Black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis): Deep purple-black; pulls free from the hollow centre. Strongly flavoured. Picks over about two weeks — check every couple of days.
Raspberry: Deep red (or gold/yellow for golden varieties) and slides off the receptacle — the hollow centre is the tell. Does not pull: a ripe raspberry separates at a touch. Extremely fragile; use within hours of picking.
Several raspberry and black raspberry bushes along the back part of the trail, along the woods. Much has already been picked over by other foragers and wildlife by this time of year, but a few berries are still peeking out in a few spots.
