Shagbark hickory
📍 109 Town Hall Dr, Leland, NC 28451, USA
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Thick green husk splits into four sections when ripe. Nuts fall; gather from the ground. Rich, sweet, buttery flavour — worth the effort of cracking the very hard shell. Dry for 2–3 weeks.
5-6 Hickory trees, producing nuts. Hickories are edible nuts with highest caloric percentage per weight. Taste like carmel-y pecans. Have very tough shells. Harvested several pounds here in November 2021. Park maintenance rakes some of them into clumps after they fall, but squirrels cannot get into these nuts/they don't spoil easily, fine to pick them off the ground.
